· Prohibited items – items whose import into the country is prohibited.
· Items admitted conditionally – items whose importation into the country is allowed with the term if a document issued by the relevant authorities of the exporting country is presented.
· Items admitted without conditions – items whose import into the country is allowed.

Conditions of admission of articles imported or in transit

Apiary products may be imported upon authorization from the Ministry of Agriculture. A health certificate issued by a competent authority should also be enclosed.
2.1.2 Meat offal:
– an import permit is essential;
– clearance will have to be obtained from the Ministry of Health.
2.1.3 Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other invertebrates. All products of these kinds are con- trolled goods. An import permit and a clearance certificate from the Ministry of Fisheries arerequired.
The import of agricultural plant and plant products is controlled goods. An import permit is essential. The goods may be released after clearance from the Quarantine services of the Ministry of Agriculture. Parcels containing sugar cane (seeds or cuttings) will not be opened by customs or parcels employees. These parcels will be opened only in Quarantine green houses by agricultural authorities.
2.2.1 All agricultural produce, fruits, seeds. An importation permit is required. An import permit is essential.

The customs declaration must contain a precise description of the nature and exact value of the content. The gross and net weight of the parcel must also be shown. The sender must indicate the disposal of the parcel in case of non-delivery and should sign the declaration form. Certain sup- plementary statements on the situation of the goods such as gifts, samples or of a commercialnature would be helpful.
Invoices indicating the exact value in the country of origin are welcomed.
Almost all goods imported in the country are controlled goods. A list of controlled and prohibited goods prepared by the Ministry of Trade and Shipping, Port Louis, have been annexed (see attachment 1) for reference. Prospective importers are therefore advised to obtain an import permit before posting their goods. Imports of plants and plant materials must be accompanied by aphytosanitary certificate.
Small items may be imported for personal use without any import licence provided that the value of the content does not exceed 500 rupees. A clearance fee is payable on any incoming parcelwhether dutiable or not on a weight-step basis and on dutiable correspondence (small packets).
Postal items including parcels received with false declaration are liable to seizure by the customs authorities.
