Definition of Terms
· Prohibited items – items whose import into the country is prohibited.
· Items admitted conditionally – items whose importation into the country is allowed with the term if a document issued by the relevant authorities of the exporting country is presented.
· Items admitted without conditions – items whose import into the country is allowed.

1 Articles prohibited as imports or in transit
Any import of securities or insurance policies is subject to authorization by the currency authority. The import of national monetary instruments is prohibited. Foreign monetary instrumentsmust be offered for sale to the currency authorities.
The import of narcotics and radioactive materials is prohibited.
The import of earth, peat, natural fertilizers, composts, stems and leaves of potatoes, tomatoes and aubergines is prohibited. Press publications, printed matter, illustrations and articles prejudicialto general human values and human rights, and those
liable to stir up animosity towards the Republic of Hungary or another country or against any people, nationality, race or creed, are prohibited as imports.
Copied audio or video cassettes or discs, including CDs, which infringe copyright may not be imported.
Instruments liable to be used as offensive weapons (knuckle-dusters, flick knives, coshes and the like), other than those which form part of a commercial exchange, may not be imported.
2 Articles admitted conditionally as imports
Arms, ammunition, gas guns and alarm guns may only be imported with the authorization of the competent police force.
For the import of narcotic drugs listed in schedules I to IV of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs signed in New York on
30 March 1961 (including medical and other samples), a certificate signed by the Ministry of Public Health is required.
Medicaments used in human medicine (including antibiotics), serums, vaccine products and treatments consisting of bacterial and viral agents, as well as cosmetic products bearing claims ofcurative effects, may only be imported with the permission of the Ministry of Public Health. An exception is made for biological materials sent to authorized hospitals and clinics for the purpose ofscientific research and experiments or for presentation and registration, and for medicaments sent as a gift.
Animals, products of animal origin and articles liable to carry cattle diseases are subject to veterinary health restrictions. Vegetables and products of vegetable origin are subject tophytosanitary restrictions.
Agricultural protection products not listed in the "List of Permitted Agricultural Protection Products" may only be imported with the permission of the competent body of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The import of pharmaceutical and nutritive products used in veterinary medicine and of products used in the destruction of animals, as well as of colonies of bacteria and viruses that cause cattlediseases, requires prior permission from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Authorization from the competent body of the Ministry of Culture and Education is required for the import of cinematographic films; for the import of radio transmitting apparatus and combinedtransmitting and receiving apparatus, authorization from the Frequency Management Bureau of the Technical Telecommunications Directorate is required.
3 Articles admitted conditionally in transit
For transit of firearms not intended for military purposes, authorization is required from the competent police force.
Transit of animals, products of animal origin and articles liable to carry cattle diseases will only be authorized following a favourable veterinary examination.
Transit of products covered by plant protection restrictions is only authorized following a phytosanitary examination, even where the item is accompanied by a valid phytosanitary certificatefrom the country from which it was sent.
4 Articles exempted from customs duty
Gift items:
a Medicaments addressed to private persons, in their original packing and packed by the pharmaceutical company or pharmacy, and therapeutic treatments prescribed by a competent attendingphysician, the quantity of which is determined by the latter.
b Items addressed to the Hungarian Red Cross.
